Those who were cleaning the dirt of city but were also treated as dirt by the BJP ruled Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) finally hit back with the only weapon they had – their Jhadu (broom). Over 5000 Safai (cleaning) workers of AMC went on an indefinite strike on the last day of 2013 to demand for full wages and permanency of their service which they were being systematically denied for over a decade.

Jan Sangharsh Manch, Gujarat Federation Of Trade UnionsMost of them were being paid less than minimum wages without grant of any other benifit like leaves, provident fund or medical allowances. These workmen who had to toil in the worst type of dirt and muck suffered large scale health problems without the authorities ever bothering to improve their miserable existence. Belonging to the weakest sections of the Dalit community, the workers finally organized themselves under the banner of Gujarat Mazdoor Sabha and Gujarat Federation of trade unions and struck work today determined that the authorities have to bend in the New Year. The pictures show thousands of men and women Safai workers on the first day of the strike at the city centre of Ahmedabad.
