Vibrant Gujarat’s paeans about development are sung all over India by Modi’s propaganda team. In the same ‘Vibrant Gujarat’, 5000 workers of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation who keep Ahmedabad clean are going on an indefinite strike on 31st of December because the administration refuses to give them the status of permanent employees thus depriving them of several rights and exploiting them to no end. The indefinite strike will be under the banner of Gujarat Mazdoor Sabha (GMS) which is a sister organization of Jan Sangharsh Manch (JSM), JSM’s work being the driving force behind this TruthOfGujarat portal. While JSM primarily works in the areas of civil liberties and human rights, GMS works for the rights of labourers and workers all over Gujarat.
Since all these workers are contract and part-time workers, they have no rights that would be otherwise available for permanent employees. These workers are paid Rs 105 for 4 hours of work or alternatively Rs 210 for 8 hours of work. They have no leaves whatsoever and are not paid overtime either. The most important issue is that they do not have any provident fund and workers who have worked with AMC for 20-30 years are left with no money in their old age. This is ‘Vibrant Gujarat’
GMS had sent a representation to the Municipal Commissioner of Ahmedabad and the Chairman of Standing Committee on behalf of these workers requesting the administration to make these workers permanent under AMC’s 1982 policy of regularization of workers who have worked for over 5 years and 900 days. However no steps whatsoever have been taken by the administration to regularize these workers.
To protest against this rampant exploitation in ‘Vibrant Gujarat’, these workers are now forced to go on an indefinite strike starting 7 a.m. on 31st December. A demonstration will be held in solidarity at 11 a.m. Lal Salaam.
